Description

This textile, called Bogolan or Bògòlanfini, is a traditional West African weaving technique closely linked to Malian culture. Its origins trace back to the Bambara people, where the word “bogo” means clay or mud, and “lan” means to make; therefore, Bogolan means “made with clay,” representing the cultural identity of the people. The predominant colors are ochre, yellow, ivory, brown, and black, which, when tastefully combined, create a unique and distinctive result. This process produces characteristic patterns with themes, geometric shapes, and symbolism based on proverbs and the community’s traditions. For this reason, it holds great cultural as well as aesthetic value. Currently, its social use is primarily decorative, serving as a work of art or as a home accessory, such as bedspreads, tablecloths, upholstery, and cushions.
