The “Always Together” couple, originating from the island of Java in Indonesia, are carved from a single piece of wood and hand-painted in the mid-20th century. Their name comes from the Javanese words “Loro Blonyo,” which translates to “two together” or “always together.” These sculptures were traditionally given as wedding gifts, representing union, fertility, and happiness for the newlyweds, who would later place these sculptures, considered sacred, in the main room of their home to ensure their wishes came true.
