Indonesian fabric, made of cotton, using the Ikat technique, a term originating from the Malay word mengikat, meaning “to tie, to knot.” Ikat is one of the most complex dyeing methods in the world, where the threads are dyed before weaving begins. The dye is prevented from penetrating certain sections by tying several threads together with a water-resistant material, such as a plant fiber. After applying the dye, the knots are untied, revealing the pattern within the fibers. The process is repeated as many times as desired for each color. Finally, the threads are woven on a loom, usually a backstrap loom where the weavers use their own bodies to maintain tension. This technique is used to create patterns primarily on textiles (clothing, cushions, bedspreads, bed covers, rugs, tablecloths, napkins, etc.), although it can also be printed or stamped onto other surfaces such as wallpaper. Authentic Ikat is a true work of art, its complexity increasing with the number of colors and patterns it features. This beautiful Ikat inspires interior design. Textiles in Indonesia are much more than just clothing or pieces of fabric. They represent a belief system, transmit traditions, and reflect the character of each community. It can be used on furniture, as a tablecloth, bedspread, or hung on the wall.
